Travel & Accommodation
Sydney is one of the world's most visited cities, with excellent international and domestic transport links. But for the eclipse, millions of extra visitors are expected — so planning ahead is essential. The earlier you book, the better your options and prices.
Book Early — Prices Will Surge
The 2024 US eclipse saw hotel prices increase 3-5x in the path of totality. Expect similar demand in Sydney. Booking 12+ months in advance will give you the best selection and prices.
Getting to Sydney
By Air
Sydney Airport (SYD) — direct flights from major cities across Asia, North America, Europe, and the Pacific. Domestic flights from all Australian capitals. Book early.
By Train
NSW TrainLink from Melbourne (11h), Brisbane (14h), or Canberra (4h) to Sydney Central. Scenic but books out for major events.
By Car
M1 from Brisbane, M31 from Melbourne/Canberra, M4 from the Blue Mountains. Expect significantly heavier traffic during eclipse week.
Where to Stay
Anywhere in the greater Sydney metropolitan area will be within the path of totality. Choose your accommodation based on proximity to your preferred viewing spot, budget, and personal preference.
CBD / Circular Quay
$$$$Closest to the harbour viewing spots. Walk to the Opera House, Mrs Macquarie's Chair, and Barangaroo. Premium prices, but unbeatable convenience.
Surry Hills / Darlinghurst
$$$Inner-city neighbourhoods with great restaurants, bars, and cafes. 15-20 minute walk or short bus to harbour locations. More character than CBD hotels.
Bondi / Eastern Suburbs
$$$Beach lifestyle with easy bus access to the CBD. Great if you want Bondi Beach as your viewing location. Range of accommodation from hostels to luxury.
North Sydney / Mosman
$$$Across the harbour from the CBD. Quieter, with great harbour views from spots like Bradleys Head. Ferry and train to Circular Quay.
Manly / Northern Beaches
$$A more relaxed beach-town atmosphere. North Head is an excellent viewing spot. 30-minute ferry ride to the city. Good mid-range options.
Parramatta / Western Sydney
$$More affordable accommodation, still within the path of totality. The centreline passes slightly south, but totality will still be close to maximum duration.
Blue Mountains
$$A stunning alternative to the city. Katoomba and Leura offer hotels, B&Bs, and holiday rentals with a mountain-village atmosphere. Slightly shorter totality.
Campbelltown / Southern Sydney
$Budget-friendly option on the southern edge of the metro area. Still within the totality path. Less convenient for harbour viewing spots but good value.
Booking Tips
- Consider flexible cancellation: Plans change. Choose accommodation with free cancellation where possible, especially when booking far in advance.
- Look at Airbnb and holiday rentals: For groups and families, a whole apartment or house can be better value than multiple hotel rooms.
- Think about eclipse week, not just the day: Expect events, festivals, and activities in the days leading up to July 22. Consider staying for several days to enjoy everything.
- Have a backup plan: If Sydney weather looks cloudy closer to the date, you may want the flexibility to travel north or inland for clearer skies. See our weather guide.
Getting Around Sydney
Sydney has an extensive public transport network. For eclipse day, public transport will almost certainly be your best option — expect roads and parking to be extremely congested.
- Opal Card: Sydney's contactless transport card works on trains, buses, ferries, and light rail. Buy one at the airport or any convenience store.
- Trains: The T1-T9 lines cover the metro area. Key stations: Central, Town Hall, Wynyard, Circular Quay, Bondi Junction.
- Ferries: Scenic and practical — the Circular Quay to Manly ferry is one of the world's great commuter journeys.
- Buses: Extensive network covering areas not served by rail, including beaches and eastern suburbs.
- Metro: Sydney's new driverless metro connects the northwest and (by 2028) the CBD via new stations at Martin Place, Barangaroo, and Central.
