Privacy Policy
Effective date: 11 June 2026 · Version 1.0
1. About This Policy
SydneyEclipse.com (“we”, “us”, “our”) is an independent Australian website providing information about the 22 July 2028 total solar eclipse over Sydney. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect personal information when you use our website and subscribe to our email updates.
We are committed to handling personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs), and to sending email in accordance with the Spam Act 2003 (Cth).
2. What Personal Information We Collect
We collect a deliberately small amount of personal information:
- Email address and topic preferences when you subscribe to our newsletter (for example: accommodation deals, eclipse gear, events, photography tips);
- Correspondence if you email us; and
- Usage data collected automatically through cookies and similar technologies — such as pages visited, approximate location (city level), device and browser type, and how you arrived at the site. See Section 5.
We do not have user accounts, do not process payments, and do not knowingly collect sensitive information (as defined in the Privacy Act) or any information from children.
3. How and Why We Use It
- To send you the eclipse updates you asked for, on the topics you selected;
- To respond to your enquiries;
- To understand how the site is used so we can improve our content; and
- To measure the effectiveness of our advertising (for example, whether an ad led to a newsletter signup).
We never sell, rent, or trade your personal information, and we will not use it for purposes incompatible with the above without your consent.
4. Email and the Spam Act
We only email people who have expressly opted in through a signup form on this site. We never use pre-ticked boxes or purchased lists. Every email we send identifies us as the sender and includes a working unsubscribe link. Unsubscribe requests take effect promptly and in any case within 5 business days, as required by the Spam Act 2003 (Cth).
Our mailing list is managed through Mailchimp (Intuit Inc.), whose handling of your data is described in the Intuit Privacy Statement.
5. Cookies, Analytics, and Advertising
This site uses:
- Google Analytics 4 to understand site usage in aggregate; and
- Google Ads conversion and remarketing tags, which help us measure our advertising and may be used to show you our ads on Google services (such as YouTube) based on your visit to this site.
These services set cookies and collect device identifiers and usage data, which is processed by Google LLC, including on servers outside Australia. You can opt out of personalised advertising at Google Ads Settings, opt out of Google Analytics with the GA opt-out browser add-on, or block cookies in your browser settings — the site works fine without them.
6. Affiliate Links
Some pages contain affiliate links to third parties such as accommodation and tour booking platforms, as disclosed on those pages. If you click one, the third party may set its own cookies and collect information under its own privacy policy. We receive aggregate commission reporting, not your personal details.
7. Disclosure and Overseas Transfers
We share personal information only with the service providers that run this site: Mailchimp (email, United States), Google (analytics, advertising, and cloud hosting, United States and other locations). We may also disclose information where required by law. Because these providers operate globally, your information may be stored or processed outside Australia; we use reputable providers with appropriate security and data-processing commitments.
8. Storage, Security, and Retention
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, loss, and unauthorised access, including access controls on our systems and use of reputable cloud providers. We keep your email address only while you remain subscribed; when you unsubscribe, it is suppressed from future sends and removed from our active list.
9. Your Rights
You can unsubscribe from our emails at any time using the link in any email. You may also contact us to request access to, correction of, or deletion of the personal information we hold about you, and we will respond within a reasonable period.
If you believe we have mishandled your personal information, please contact us first. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au. If you are visiting from the UK or European Economic Area, you may also have rights under the UK GDPR or GDPR (including access, rectification, erasure, and objection) — contact us and we will honour them.

11. Updates to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The current version is always published on this page with the effective date above. See also our About page for who we are and what we do.
